5 Tips to Scale a Business to Fit Your Life

March 17, 20254 min read

If you’re a mom running a business, you probably started it for more freedom and flexibility – but sometimes, it can feel like your business is running you instead. I get it. As a tax strategist and the owner of The Tara CPA Firm, I work with a lot of CEO moms who are juggling growing businesses and growing families. You want to scale your business to fit your life, but you don’t know where to start.

Here are some tips to scale a business so it supports the life you actually want to live. And if you love these tips, you’ll definitely want to check out my conversation with AnnMarie Rose, an online business scaling strategist for coaches, consultants, and service providers!

5 Tips to Scale a Business to Fit Your Life

1. Reflect on Your Business Model

Whether you’re pregnant, your kids are 5 and 7, or 11 and 13, we can all take time to reflect on our business models and make sure that the business model is really supporting our lives.

This might take some number crunching. You might sit down and calculate the number of hours you want to work each week and realize that it’s not aligned with what you’re currently working (or not aligned with your revenue goals). When you realize that you need to make a change, it’s okay to let go of an old business model that’s no longer working and shift to a new one.

That might mean increasing your pricing, switching from 1:1 work to group work, or something entirely different.

2. Automate and Delegate

If you want to scale your business without burning out, automation and delegation are your best friends. As a tax strategist, I know firsthand how much smoother things run when you aren’t the bottleneck.

Look at the tasks you do repeatedly and find ways to automate them. This could be things like:

  • Scheduling client calls

  • Sending invoices and follow-ups

  • Onboarding new clients

And don’t be afraid to bring on help. Whether it’s a virtual assistant, bookkeeper, or social media manager, outsourcing the right tasks frees you up to focus on what you do best.

3. Plan for the Life You Want

When I started my business at 25, I didn’t fully understand how much it would need to evolve to support the life I wanted. I had my first child at 26, and let me tell you – running a business while raising little ones requires some serious planning.

Whether you’re preparing for maternity leave, summer vacations with the kids, or simply want to work fewer hours, map out how your business needs to function to support that vision. This means:

  • Building systems that run without you

  • Creating recurring revenue streams

  • Setting clear boundaries with your time

And being okay with it if everything doesn’t go according to plan. That’s motherhood and business ownership!

4. Let Go of the Guilt

One of the hardest parts of being a CEO mom is the guilt. Guilt when you’re working and not with your kids. Guilt when you’re with your kids and not working. But here’s the truth: You’re building something that not only supports your family financially but also models ambition and independence.

Give yourself permission to prioritize what matters most to you. Sometimes, that means stepping away from your business to be present with your family. Other times, it means investing time into scaling so you can have more freedom later.

5. Keep Adjusting as You Grow

Your business isn’t static, and neither is your life. What works today may not work next year, and that’s okay. The key is to regularly evaluate and adjust.

At least once a quarter, sit down and ask yourself:

  • Is my business supporting my life the way I want it to?

  • What needs to change to create more balance?

  • Am I on track to meet my financial and personal goals?

Build a Life-Proof Business

Scaling your business doesn’t mean working more hours or hustling harder. It means building something that fits your life now and in the future. And trust me, it’s 100% possible.
