How to Make the Holidays Magical on a Budget as an Entrepreneur Mom
December is here, and if you’re anything like me, you’re already juggling a million things on your to-do list. Between decorating the Christmas tree, wrapping up business for the year, and planning all the holiday magic for your family, it can feel like you’re running on fumes if you’re an entrepreneur mom.
But let’s take a deep breath. I want to talk about something that’s been coming up a lot in conversations with my fellow CEO moms lately – money. Specifically, how we manage it during the holidays. Whether you’re feeling the pinch more than usual this year or just looking for ways to be more intentional with your holiday spending, you’re not alone.
How to Make the Holidays Magical as an Entrepreneur Mom
As moms (and especially as entrepreneur moms), we often feel the weight of making Christmas perfect. We want to see our kids’ eyes light up with joy, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that joy comes from more – more gifts, more activities, more spending.
But let me remind you: the number of gifts under the tree does not define the magic of Christmas. The value of your holiday season isn’t tied to how much you spend – it’s in the moments you create, the lessons you teach, and the memories you make.
Scale Back with Intention
A few years ago, my husband Chance and I decided to scale back on holiday spending. It wasn’t just about saving money – it was about teaching our kids what really matters. Here’s how we approached it:
Set a Budget
For our family of six, it’s easy to see how costs add up quickly. We set a budget for each child and stick to it. Sure, it means getting creative sometimes, but it keeps things manageable and stress-free.
Focus on Quality Over Quantity
Instead of buying lots of small, inexpensive items just to fill the room, we invest in gifts that our kids will truly use and love. And yes, that sometimes means one “big” gift paired with smaller, thoughtful ones.
Teach Gratitude
Our kids know that experiences and memberships, like trips to the zoo or museum, are gifts too. We talk about how lucky they are to enjoy these things and help them see the value in experiences over stuff.
Lessons for the Future
Scaling back now isn’t just about this year – it’s about setting the tone for the future. If our kids grow up expecting mountains of gifts, how do we adjust that later without disappointment? By focusing on thoughtful, meaningful giving now, we’re shaping their expectations for the years to come.
We’ve also learned to be okay with less. One year, I remember looking at the gifts under the tree on Christmas Eve and feeling like it wasn’t “enough.” My husband reminded me why we made this choice in the first place: it’s not about the quantity, t’s about the joy and memories we create. And you know what? The kids were thrilled.
A Reminder for This Christmas
I don’t want you to feel stress over money, quantity of gifts, and types of gifts. I know it gets harder as kids get older, because they all talk to their friends and start comparing.
When this happens in our family, we use it as an opportunity to remind our kids to be grateful for what they do have. Our kids don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from or if they’re going to be sleeping in a warm house or if they’re going to have a nice warm jacket to wear. We help them to realize that there so many families out there that don’t have those things. The holidays are a great opportunity to talk about the true meaning of Christmas, what’s important to you and your family, and how to be grateful for the things that we have.
And so, if you’re feeling the pressure to go all out this Christmas, I want you to remember this: magic isn’t measured in dollars. It’s found in the laughter, the hugs, the cozy nights watching holiday movies, and the memories you make together.
If you’re an entrepreneur mom, give yourself permission to do less, spend less, and focus on what truly matters this season. You’re already giving your family the best gift of all – you.
